DIY Copper Wire Plant Stick Tutorial: Add Handmade Charm to Your Houseplants

• Ring mandrel or cylindrical object for forming loops and spirals

Choosing Your Design

The beauty of this project is that there is no single "correct" design.

For this version, I created:

• A large spiral focal point

• A circular beaded frame

• A beaded center section

• A sturdy stem for placing into soil

The combination creates a whimsical flower-inspired design that brings movement and interest to any planter.

Step 1: Create the Main Spiral

Start with your 10-gauge copper wire.

Using your fingers or round nose pliers, begin forming a spiral at one end of the wire.

Don't worry if your first spiral isn't perfect. Copper wire has a way of teaching patience, and sometimes the slightly wonky spirals end up being the most interesting ones.

Continue expanding the spiral until it reaches the size you want for the center of your design.

Step 2: Build the Decorative Frame

Once your center spiral is complete, use a cylinder to shape the flower petal border. Make petals big enough to add your decorative beads later.

Try to keep the spacing fairly even, but remember that handmade charm often comes from slight imperfections.

Step 3: Create the Stem

The remaining length of 10-gauge wire becomes the plant stick stem.

Leave enough length so the stake can be inserted securely into the soil while still displaying the decorative top above the foliage.

Most finished plant sticks work well at approximately 10–12 inches long, depending on your planter size.

Step 4: Add Accent Beads

For additional interest, thread a few larger accent beads onto the stem below the main design.

These create visual balance and help draw the eye from the decorative top down through the piece.

Secure them with decorative wraps using the 22-gauge wire.

Step 5: Add the Beads

Thread your smaller round beads around the outer frame.

Secure each bead using the 22-gauge wire.

The turquoise beads shown in this project create a beautiful contrast against the warm copper tones, but you can experiment with:

• Wooden beads

• Pearl-style beads

Choose colors that complement your plants or home décor.

Step 6: Finish with Decorative Details

Use the remaining 22-gauge wire to create:
